From Offshore Oil to Aerospace: Why the Port of Iberia Matters to Acadiana’s Next Chapter

Spedale’s Florist serving New Iberia and Iberia Parish, with Louisiana magnolias, an offshore oil platform, and a rocket launch symbolizing Port of Iberia and SpaceX growth in Acadiana.

For decades, the Port of Iberia in New Iberia, Louisiana has been closely tied to South Louisiana’s offshore oil and gas industry.

Its fabrication yards, marine access and skilled industrial workforce have supported some of the largest and most technically demanding energy projects in the Gulf of Mexico. Today, as Acadiana prepares for a new wave of aerospace investment, those same capabilities could give New Iberia and Iberia Parish an important role in what comes next.

The Port of Iberia is a 2,000-acre industrial and manufacturing complex with access to the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway and the Gulf of Mexico.

That industrial foundation matters because New Iberia is not trying to create a heavy-industrial workforce from scratch.

It already has one.

An Industrial Base Built by Offshore Oil and Gas

A strong example is Shell’s Appomattox Deepwater development.

Dynamic Industries fabricated modules for the project at the Port of Iberia. After approximately two years of fabrication work, those modules were shipped from New Iberia to Ingleside, Texas, where they became part of the larger Appomattox production system before ultimately heading to the Gulf of Mexico.

Port of Iberia Executive Director Craig Romero said the project supported jobs not only in New Iberia but throughout Acadiana, including welders, vendors and suppliers.

Appomattox generated additional work in New Iberia as well.

Bayou Pipe Coating performed flowline-pipe work for the project from its Port of Iberia operation, with more than 200 employees involved at the facility.

Projects like these demonstrate something important about New Iberia.

The Port of Iberia is not simply industrial property.

It is part of an established network of fabricators, welders, machinists, marine operators, engineers, transportation companies, suppliers and specialty contractors accustomed to building and moving very large things.

For decades, offshore energy helped create that capability.

Building for the Next Generation of Industry

That industrial base is still growing.

Cajun Industries has developed a major module assembly yard at the Port of Iberia designed to support large industrial projects and hundreds of skilled craft workers, including crane operators, ironworkers, pipefitters and welders.

The Port has said that direct access to the Gulf through the Acadiana Gulf of Mexico Access Channel, or AGMAC, was instrumental in Cajun Industries selecting the Port of Iberia for the facility.

The module assembly yard was open for business by May 2026.

AGMAC itself is an important part of the Port’s long-term strategy.

The Port describes the project as a 53-mile route from the Port of Iberia to the Gulf of Mexico, with a channel depth of 16 feet.

For a heavy-industrial port, deeper water is more than an infrastructure improvement.

Some fabricated structures are simply too large or too heavy to move economically over conventional highways. Better marine access increases the size and type of projects companies at the Port can pursue.

For decades, much of that work was driven by offshore oil and gas.

Now another industry is arriving in Acadiana.

SpaceX Changes the Conversation

On August 25, 2026, SpaceX announced Starbase Louisiana, a major aerospace development planned for Vermilion Parish.

Louisiana Economic Development says the project represents $100 billion in planned investment, with approximately 3,000 direct jobs over the next decade and more than 8,100 additional indirect jobs — more than 11,000 potential new job opportunities across Acadiana.

The significance for New Iberia became apparent almost immediately.

Port of Iberia Executive Director Craig Romero said companies from around the United States had already been contacting the Port, including businesses interested in locating near the future SpaceX project so they could potentially supply materials and services associated with its construction.

Romero also made clear that the Port of Iberia has not had direct discussions with SpaceX.

That distinction matters.

The opportunity for New Iberia is not based on a claim that SpaceX itself is moving into the Port.

It is based on the possibility that contractors, fabricators, suppliers and other businesses serving a project of this scale may want to locate within the surrounding Acadiana industrial corridor.

And companies are already looking.

From Offshore Fabrication to Aerospace

There is a logical reason they would look at New Iberia.

Aerospace and offshore energy are different industries, but large industrial projects often require many of the same underlying capabilities:

heavy fabrication, structural steel, specialty welding, machining, piping, electrical work, cranes, logistics, marine transportation and large assembly areas.

Those skills already exist throughout South Louisiana.

The equipment may change.

The end customer may change.

But the ability to manufacture complex structures, move enormous loads and complete demanding industrial projects does not suddenly lose its value.

That may be one of the Port of Iberia’s greatest assets as Acadiana enters this next chapter.

Growth Does Not Stop at Parish Lines

The Port of Iberia story also illustrates something that is easy to miss when looking at Acadiana on a map.

Our economy does not operate according to city limits.

Workers, businesses, suppliers and customers move every day through Lafayette Parish, Iberia Parish, St. Martin Parish, and Vermilion Parish.

A project in Vermilion Parish can create work for a fabricator in Iberia Parish, a supplier in Lafayette Parish, a contractor in St. Martin Parish and dozens of other businesses scattered throughout the region.

That interconnected economy is one of Acadiana’s strengths.

It is also the environment in which Spedale’s Florist and Wholesale has operated since 1984.

New Iberia Is Right in Our Backyard

Spedale’s floral design and fulfillment center is located at 1012 Petroleum Parkway in Broussard, on the New Iberia side of the Lafayette-Broussard market.

From our actual facility, the New Iberia Amtrak station at 402 W. Washington Street is approximately 8.9 driving miles away — about 14 minutes by car.

The Port of Iberia is approximately 13.6 driving miles from Spedale’s — about 20 minutes away.

Those are driving distances from our actual facility, not generic Broussard-to-New Iberia city measurements.

That puts New Iberia right in our backyard.

And that geography matters.

New Iberia is not a distant market that Spedale’s occasionally agrees to service. It is one of the closest major communities to our design center and part of our regular Acadiana delivery network.

Spedale’s provides same-day flower delivery throughout New Iberia and Iberia Parish when orders are placed before our published daily delivery cutoff.

For deliveries inside our direct local service area, the arrangement is designed and delivered by the Spedale’s team — no wire-service middleman and no flowers shipped in a box.

Local Does Not Always Stop at the City-Limit Sign

We understand the loyalty New Iberia residents have toward their community.

We respect it.

Spedale’s believes in locally owned businesses because we have been one ourselves since 1984.

But Acadiana has always been more interconnected than individual city boundaries suggest.

For a New Iberia customer, choosing Spedale’s means choosing an independently owned Acadiana florist located roughly nine driving miles from a downtown New Iberia landmark.

Our floral arrangements for New Iberia are created by our own team at our Broussard design center and delivered into the community as part of our established local service network.

Spedale’s serves a core regional footprint encompassing Lafayette Parish, Iberia Parish, St. Martin Parish, and Vermilion Parish.

To us, those communities form one connected Acadiana marketplace.

More Than 3,000 Five-Star Customer Reviews

Proximity matters.

Trust matters even more.

As of September 2026, Spedale’s has earned more than 3,000 five-star customer reviews across Google and Shopper Approved.

Those reviews represent thousands of customers who trusted Spedale’s with birthdays, anniversaries, funerals, celebrations, new babies and countless everyday moments.

For someone who already lives in New Iberia, that reputation provides another established Acadiana choice.

For someone ordering flowers to New Iberia from another state, it can be even more important.

An out-of-town sender may not know exactly where Broussard ends and New Iberia begins.

They are usually trying to answer a few much simpler questions:

Is this a real florist?

Are they actually close to New Iberia?

Do they really serve the area?

Can I reach a real person if I need help?

Can I trust them with an important occasion?

That is where Spedale’s combination of proximity, experience and customer history becomes meaningful.

A Regional Florist Built to Serve Acadiana

Spedale’s is both a retail florist and a wholesale floral operation.

That combination gives our design team access to a broad and frequently changing inventory of fresh flowers, plants and floral supplies while supporting the volume required to serve multiple Acadiana communities.

Customers receive direct service from the company creating their arrangement, backed by experienced designers, established local delivery routes, order communication and more than four decades in the floral industry.

It is a regional model that fits the way Acadiana itself operates.

Not isolated communities.

Connected communities.

From the Gulf to the Stars

There is something fitting about the next chapter taking shape around New Iberia.

For generations, companies at the Port of Iberia helped support the offshore energy industry that shaped much of South Louisiana’s modern economy.

They learned how to fabricate complex structures, move enormous equipment and solve difficult industrial problems.

Now a new industry is arriving in Acadiana.

No one yet knows exactly how much of the SpaceX supply chain will ultimately reach Iberia Parish, and it would be premature to claim otherwise.

But companies are looking.

The Port continues expanding its industrial capabilities.

Marine access is improving.

And New Iberia possesses something that cannot be created overnight:

decades of industrial experience and the people who know how to put that experience to work.

The Port of Iberia was built looking toward the Gulf.

Its next opportunities may extend much farther.

Spedale’s Florist is proud to have served Acadiana since 1984 and proud to serve customers throughout Lafayette Parish, Iberia Parish, St. Martin Parish, and Vermilion Parish — including New Iberia and Iberia Parish as part of our regular direct-service delivery network.

Because whatever the next chapter brings, these communities will continue growing together.

Starbase Louisiana Is Coming to Vermilion Parish — and Abbeville Is Looking to the Future

Something extraordinary is coming to South Louisiana.

On August 25, 2026, state and local leaders gathered in Abbeville for the announcement of Starbase Louisiana, a major new aerospace development planned for Vermilion Parish.

The project is expected to bring significant new investment, jobs, contractors, businesses and families into the region over the coming years. For Abbeville and communities throughout Vermilion Parish, it represents a remarkable new chapter.

From the Louisiana Coast to the Stars

For generations, Vermilion Parish has been shaped by agriculture, energy, seafood, waterways and the people who built their lives here.

Now rockets are becoming part of the story.

Starbase Louisiana is planned for southern Vermilion Parish near Pecan Island, while Abbeville — the parish seat — hosted the official announcement and is expected to play an important role as activity surrounding the project grows.

Workers will arrive. Contractors will establish relationships. Businesses will expand. Families will relocate. Meetings, celebrations, grand openings and community events will follow.

And through all of those changes, the everyday moments of life will continue too — birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, new babies, sympathy occasions and simply letting someone know you are thinking about them.

Spedale’s Florist Is Ready to Serve a Growing Vermilion Parish

Spedale’s Florist has served Acadiana for more than 40 years, providing fresh flower delivery throughout Abbeville and Vermilion Parish from our Broussard design and fulfillment studio.

As new residents, companies, contractors and organizations become part of the community, we look forward to welcoming them just as we have served generations of South Louisiana families.

Whether you need flowers delivered to a home, business, funeral home, church, hospital, office or special event in the Abbeville area, our team is here to help.

Flowers for Business, Events and New Beginnings

Major projects create more than construction activity. They create relationships.

Flowers and plants are often used to recognize those moments — welcoming a new employee, thanking a customer, celebrating an opening, recognizing a milestone or sending congratulations to a new business.

As Starbase Louisiana develops and new organizations establish themselves in Vermilion Parish, Spedale’s Florist will continue providing dependable local floral service for both personal and business occasions.

Proud to Be Part of Acadiana’s Next Chapter

No one knows exactly how much the region will change in the years ahead, but one thing is certain: people across the country — and perhaps around the world — are going to hear much more about Abbeville and Vermilion Parish.

For a South Louisiana florist that has spent more than four decades serving this region, that is something worth celebrating.

From live oaks and magnolias to rockets headed toward the stars, Acadiana has always had a way of combining tradition with something new.

Welcome to the next chapter, Vermilion Parish.
